1 Chronicles 15:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Of the sonnes of Hebron: Eliel the chiefe, and his brethren fourescore. 1 Chronicles 15:9 (KJV)

“And David the king called for all the elders of Israel, and the captains of thousands, and said unto them, Let us now bring up the ark of God, that is called by the name of the covenant, into the midst of the city.” (1 Chronicles 15:9, KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles, part of the Old Testament, gives a historical account of the Israelites, especially the reign of King David and the establishment of the Temple in Jerusalem. In this passage we see David and the leaders of Israel preparing to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem.

The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred object made according to God’s instructions during the time of Moses. It symbolized God’s presence among His people and contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s staff, and a jar of manna (Hebrews 9:4‑5). The Ark was kept in the Holy of Holies of the tabernacle and later in the Temple.

David recognised the Ark’s significance and desired to place it in Jerusalem, the capital and spiritual centre of Israel. He understood that God’s presence was essential for the nation’s well‑being and blessing. An earlier attempt to move the Ark had ended in disaster because it was not carried according to God’s commands (2 Samuel 6:1‑8). Learning from that mistake, David resolved to follow God’s instructions precisely this time.

The involvement of the elders of Israel and the captains over thousands shows the importance of the occasion. Their participation indicates that the bringing of the Ark was a united national effort, involving the prominent leaders of the people.

Later verses describe the people’s joy as they prepared to lift the Ark. Their enthusiasm, gratitude, and reverence reflect an awareness that they were about to fulfill a sacred duty and to experience the blessings that accompany God’s presence.

Application for believers today includes recognizing God’s presence in our lives and communities, valuing it as David did. The episode reminds us to follow God’s instructions with reverence and humility, learning from past errors. It also encourages united worship, urging churches to involve leaders and members alike, and to serve the Lord with gladness, appreciating the privilege of a relationship with Him.
