1 Chronicles 18:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

And Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah was ouer the hoste, and Iehoshaphat the sonne of Ahilud, Recorder. 1 Chronicles 18:15 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a larger passage that records the victories and achievements of King David. In it two individuals are named: Joab and Jehoshaphat. Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was the nephew of King David and served as commander of David’s army, the “host.” He played a significant role in many of David’s military campaigns, displaying bravery and skill that were instrumental in securing Israel’s victories. Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, is identified as the “recorder.” In this capacity he acted as a scribe or secretary to the king, preserving official records, administrative matters, and royal decrees. The recorder’s work was essential for maintaining accurate documentation and providing counsel to the monarch. Together Joab and Jehoshaphat represent the dual pillars of David’s administration: military leadership and administrative record‑keeping. Their respective contributions helped to ensure both the security and the stability of the kingdom. Although the verse is primarily historical rather than theological, it offers valuable insight into the structure of Israel’s leadership during David’s reign. Understanding the distinct roles of commander and recorder sheds light on the political and organizational framework of the time. As with any biblical passage, it is important to read this verse in its broader context. Examining the surrounding verses and chapters can reveal additional historical details and the spiritual lessons that flow from the narrative. By appreciating both the military exploits and the careful record‑keeping, readers gain a fuller picture of how David’s kingdom functioned and flourished.
