1 Chronicles 2:44

Listen to this article

And Shema begat Raham, the father of Iorkoam: and Rekem begate Shammai. 1 Chronicles 2:44 (KJV)

This verse is part of a genealogical record found in the book of 1 Chronicles. The book of Chronicles serves as a historical account of the people of Israel, tracing their lineage and providing insights into their history. To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, it is helpful to examine the context and the surrounding verses. In 1 Chronicles 2 the chapter primarily focuses on the genealogy of the tribe of Judah, which includes the descendants of Jacob’s son Judah, and the verse in question is a part of that detailed lineage.

Now let us look at the individuals mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:44. Shema is mentioned as the father of Raham. Unfortunately there is limited information available about Shema and Raham outside of this genealogical record, and the primary purpose of such accounts is to establish lineage rather than provide extensive biographical detail. Raham is identified as the son of Shema, and likewise little is known about him apart from this verse. Jorkoam is noted as the son of Raham, making him the grandson of Shema, and again the Scripture offers no further personal details about him.

Rekem is listed as the father of Shammai. As with Shema and Raham, there is limited information about Rekem and Shammai outside of this genealogy. Shammai is identified simply as the son of Rekem, and no additional details are given.

While these individuals may not have significant personal stories recorded in the Bible, their inclusion is important because it helps establish the lineage and heritage of the people of Israel, particularly the tribe of Judah. Overall, 1 Chronicles 2:44 serves as a component of the broader genealogical record in Chronicles, offering insight into the ancestry of Israel and reminding us of the historical roots of the nation and the value of tracing one’s ancestry in understanding God’s plan throughout history.
