1 Chronicles 2:8
And the sonnes of Ethan: Azariah. 1 Chronicles 2:8 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles is primarily a historical record that emphasizes genealogies and the reigns of Israel’s kings, especially the line of David and the preparations for the temple. Within this framework, verse 2:8 records a brief but significant link in the Levitical family tree: Ethan is named as the father of Azariah.
Ethan is identified elsewhere in the chronicle as one of the Levitical musicians appointed by David (1 Chronicles 25). He is not the same individual as Jeduthun, who is listed separately among the singers. Although the biblical text does not describe Ethan as a “skillful man” or a “seer,” tradition attributes Psalm 89 to Ethan the Ezrahite, a writer praised for his knowledge of God’s covenant with David (1 Kings 4:31). This association underscores Ethan’s respected status among the Levites.
The relationship between Ethan and Azariah is presented in several ways across the genealogical sections. 1 Chronicles 6:17 records Ethan and Azariah as brothers, both sons of Ithamar, placing them firmly within the Levitical line. In contrast, 1 Chronicles 6:44 lists the sons of Ethan as Amasai and Mahath, and 1 Chronicles 6:46 mentions Azariah again without explicitly calling him a son, suggesting that he may be a descendant rather than a direct offspring. The verse under study, however, directly calls Azariah a son of Ethan, indicating that at least in this passage the author understood a father‑son connection.
Azariah himself appears only briefly in the Levitical genealogy (1 Chronicles 6:46). Apart from this mention, the Scriptures provide no further details about his life or ministry. Because several individuals named Azariah occur elsewhere in the Bible, readers are cautioned not to conflate this Levitical Azariah with the prophets or officials who share the same name.
Understanding this verse helps illuminate the broader purpose of Chronicles: to preserve the names of those who served in the temple and to trace the continuity of worship through the generations of Levites. By recording Ethan’s lineage, the chronicler affirms the role of the Levitical musicians in Israel’s religious heritage and underscores the importance of each family’s contribution to the worship of Yahweh.
