1 Chronicles 2:9
The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai.
1 Chronicles 2:9 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of a genealogy in 1 Chronicles. Such records were vital in ancient Israel because they showed tribal identity, family rights, and inheritance. Here the line of Judah is traced through Hezron, the son of Perez, who was born to Judah and Tamar (1 Chronicles 2:4-5). These genealogies helped the people know their place in God’s covenant community.
Meaning
Hezron had three sons: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai. Each name marks a branch of the family. Jerahmeel became the founder of the Jerahmeelites, a clan mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament. Ram is also called Aram in some lists (Ruth 4:19, Matthew 1:3-4), and his line leads to Boaz and then to King David. Chelubai is identified as Caleb in later passages (1 Chronicles 2:18, 42), though here he is named only briefly. The Targum suggests these sons were born in Egypt, but this is uncertain.
Biblical connections
These names are not random. The genealogy of Judah points forward to the Messiah. Ram appears in the ancestry of Jesus Christ, as recorded in Matthew 1:3-4. Thus this list connects the tribe of Judah to the promised Savior. Even the brief mention of Jerahmeel and Chelubai shows that every branch of the family had a place in the unfolding story of redemption.
Application
God works through ordinary families and unnoticed names. Every person in this record had a place in His plan. Believers can trust that their own lives, even when they seem small, are part of God’s greater purpose. The verse reminds us that God values each individual, not just the famous ones.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God keeps His promises across generations. He preserved the line of Judah through Hezron’s sons, leading to David and ultimately to Christ. We can rest in His faithful care over history and over our own lives. His plan is sure, and He is worthy of our trust.
