1 Chronicles 22:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfill the Statutes and Iudgements which the Lord charged Moses with, concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage, dread not, nor be dismayed. 1 Chronicles 22:13 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that primarily focuses on the reign of King David and the preparations for building the temple in Jerusalem. In chapter 22 David is making preparations for his son Solomon to succeed him as king and to build the temple. David himself desired to build a house for the Lord, but God did not allow him to do so because he had been a man of war and had shed much blood. Instead God chose Solomon to undertake the task, as noted in 1 Chronicles 22:8 and reinforced in 1 Chronicles 28:6 and 29:1. Although David could not be the temple’s builder, he played a significant role in gathering the resources and laying the groundwork for the construction.

Verse 13 presents a clear principle: if Solomon carefully observes and follows the statutes and judgments that the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel, he will prosper. Throughout the Old Testament God established a covenant with the Israelites, providing laws and commandments to guide their lives. Obedience to these statutes and judgments was essential for the people to experience God’s blessings and to prosper in various aspects of life.

The prosperity spoken of in this verse is not limited to material wealth. True prosperity also includes spiritual blessings such as peace, joy, and a deeper relationship with God. When believers align their lives with God’s statutes and judgments, they can experience His favour and blessings in every area of life.

David’s exhortation to “be strong, and of good courage” reminds us of the importance of relying on God’s strength. Following God’s commandments may not always be easy, but with His help we can overcome challenges and remain steadfast in our faith. The verse concludes by urging Solomon not to fear or be dismayed. Trusting in God’s promises and walking in obedience should dispel fear and anxiety, allowing us to face any situation with confidence, knowing that God is with us and rewards obedience.
