1 Chronicles 22:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and provides historical accounts, genealogies, and details about the reign of King David and his preparations for building the temple. In chapter 22, David makes preparations for the construction of the temple that his son Solomon would later build. David addresses Solomon and encourages him to undertake this important task.

David’s prayer:In this verse, David prays for Solomon, seeking God’s blessings upon him. David understands the significance of wisdom, understanding, and obedience to the law of the Lord. He desires that Solomon be equipped with the necessary qualities and authority to fulfill his role as the future king of Israel and the builder of God’s temple.

Wisdom and understanding:David recognizes that wisdom and understanding are essential for effective leadership. True wisdom comes from the Lord, and David prays for Solomon to receive this divine wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge rightly, make sound judgments, and live according to God’s principles. Understanding refers to discernment, perception, and insight into the ways of God.

Charge concerning Israel:David asks God to give Solomon a charge or a commission regarding Israel. This charge likely refers to the responsibility and authority that Solomon would have as king. David desires that Solomon be equipped to lead the nation with wisdom and understanding, making decisions that align with God’s law and purposes.

Keeping the law of the Lord:David emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s law. He desires that Solomon remains faithful to the covenant established between God and Israel. By following God’s commands, Solomon would ensure the prosperity, well‑being, and spiritual integrity of the nation.
