1 Chronicles 22:11

Now, my son, the Lord be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the Lord thy God, as he hath said of thee.

1 Chronicles 22:11 (KJV)

King David speaks these words to his son Solomon near the end of David’s life. David had wanted to build a temple for the Lord, but God told him he could not because he had fought many wars and shed much blood. Instead, God chose Solomon to build the temple, promising him peace and rest from enemies (1 Chronicles 22:8-10).

David’s blessing has three parts. He asks that the Lord be with Solomon, that Solomon prosper, and that he build the house of the Lord. The phrase “as he hath said of thee” shows that this task was not a human ambition but a divine appointment. God had already spoken about Solomon, and David’s words confirm that calling. Success in this work depends on God’s presence and blessing, not merely on human effort. The verse emphasizes that God enables those He calls, so Solomon’s obedience rests on divine faithfulness.

The temple Solomon built became the central place of worship for Israel, symbolizing God’s dwelling among His people. For Christians, this points to a greater fulfillment in Christ, who builds the true temple of God’s people, the church. In 2 Corinthians 1:20, all God’s promises find their “yes” in Christ, connecting Solomon’s divine appointment to the wider certainty of God’s word. This verse also highlights the importance of obedience to God’s specific calling and the assurance that God enables those He calls.

This verse teaches that success in God’s work depends on His presence and blessing, not merely on human effort. Just as Solomon was entrusted with a specific task, each believer has a unique calling from God. We should seek His presence and guidance as we undertake the responsibilities He assigns.

  • Recognize that God has a plan for your life and that He enables those He calls.

  • Build up the body of Christ through your actions and service, just as Solomon built the temple.

David’s blessing is a model of godly encouragement. He points his son to rely on the Lord’s presence and faithfulness. When we face tasks that seem too great, we can trust that the God who calls us is faithful to prosper His purposes. Our part is to obey and depend on Him.
