1 Chronicles 23:11
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father’s house.
1 Chronicles 23:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to a record of King David’s final arrangements for the Levites. In 1 Chronicles 23, David prepares for the temple that his son Solomon will build. He organizes the Levites into groups according to their families, so that each group has a clear duty in worship.
The sons of Shimei, from the Gershonite branch of Levi, are being divided into father’s houses. Jahath is named as the chief, and Zizah as the second. In verse 10, Zizah is also called Zina, which may be a shorter form of the same name.
Meaning
Jeush and Beriah had few sons, so they were counted as one father’s house. The phrase “in one reckoning” means that their descendants were treated as a single unit for service. They received one assignment together rather than separate ones.
This arrangement was practical. A very small family could not carry out all the duties that a larger family could. By joining them, the Levites kept the service orderly and complete. Every family, no matter its size, still had a place.
Biblical connections
The careful organization of the Levites reflects the order that God values in worship. In 1 Corinthians 14:40, Paul urges that all things be done decently and in order. The same principle appears here: God’s work is not chaotic but arranged with purpose.
Application
This verse teaches that every believer has a role in God’s service, even when that role seems small. Jeush and Beriah were not excluded because they had few sons. They were included in the work, just as every Christian is part of the body of Christ.
It also reminds us that unity matters. When a family was too small, it joined with another. Cooperation made the service stronger. Believers today can work together, combining their gifts for the good of the church.
Reflection
God sees the details of our lives and our service. He knows when our resources are limited, and He still gives us a meaningful place. The joining of Jeush and Beriah shows that God’s work accommodates all who are willing to serve.
Consider how you can serve faithfully with what God has given you. Even a small contribution, offered with a willing heart, is valuable in His sight. God’s plan includes every willing heart, and no service is too small to matter.
