1 Chronicles 24:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim.”

1 Chronicles 24:12 (KJV) states: “The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of 1 Chronicles that describes the organization of the priests and Levites in the service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. The context is a listing of the divisions of the priests, which was important for maintaining order and ensuring that all responsibilities were properly distributed among the descendants of Aaron.

Chronicles 24 provides a detailed account of the divisions of the priests, which were established by King David during his reign. The purpose of these divisions was to ensure that all the priestly duties, including the offering of sacrifices and leading worship, were carried out efficiently and fairly among the descendants of Aaron. In verse 12, we encounter the names of two individuals: Eliashib and Jakim. They are listed as the eleventh and twelfth divisions, respectively. However, the specific details about these individuals are not provided in this verse or in the surrounding verses. The purpose of this passage is primarily to present the divisions of the priests, rather than focusing on the individuals themselves.

It’s important to note that throughout the Bible, names often carry significant meaning. While we don’t have explicit information about Eliashib and Jakim in this context, their names may have held particular significance or reflected certain characteristics. Studying their names in their original Hebrew form and exploring other biblical references to these names might provide further insight.

In a broader sense, this passage highlights the importance of order, structure, and the equitable distribution of responsibilities within the priestly service. It shows the care and attention given by King David to organize the priests, ensuring that their service to God was performed faithfully and efficiently.
