1 Chronicles 24:13

The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

1 Chronicles 24:13 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a detailed list in 1 Chronicles 24. King David and Zadok the high priest organized the descendants of Aaron into twenty-four divisions for temple service. Each division had a leader, and they served in regular rotation. Their duties included offering sacrifices, maintaining the temple, and administering worship. The thirteenth division was assigned to Huppah, and the fourteenth to Jeshebeab. This careful arrangement shows that God values order in worship.

These two names appear only here in the Bible, so little is known about the men themselves. Their inclusion shows that God values every person who serves Him, even those whose names are not prominent elsewhere. The order of the list also shows that worship in Israel was not random but carefully arranged. God values structure and faithfulness in service. Even obscure servants have a place in His plan.

The same priestly divisions appear later in Nehemiah 10:20 and Ezra 2:37, showing that this system continued after the exile. Later references in Ezra 10:20 and Jeremiah 20:1 also connect to these divisions. This connection reminds readers that faithful arrangements for worship can endure across generations. The list continues with the fifteenth division to Bilgah and the sixteenth to Immer, showing the pattern was complete.

Believers today do not follow the twenty-four divisions, but the principle of orderly service remains. Each person has a role in the church, and every role matters. Serving faithfully in a quiet or unnoticed position is honorable to God. Cooperation and shared responsibility help the whole body function well. Even those whose names are not prominent are part of God’s ordained plan. God sees the work done for Him, and He remembers it.

Huppah and Jeshebeab are barely mentioned, yet their service was recorded in Scripture. This encourages readers to serve with diligence even when no one praises them. The verse calls for reverence, order, and faithful participation in worship. It also reminds us that God’s plan includes many quiet workers whose names are known only to Him.
