1 Chronicles 24:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer.”

Context:1 Chronicles 24 is a chapter that describes the divisions of the priests and Levites for their service in the house of the Lord. This chapter outlines the organisation and responsibilities of the priestly order established by King David.

Verse:“The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer.” (1 Chronicles 24:14, KJV)

Understanding the verse:

  • The verse is part of a list that enumerates the divisions of the priests according to their ancestral houses. Each division was assigned specific duties in the temple service.
  • In this particular verse, the fifteenth division is assigned to Bilgah, and the sixteenth division is assigned to Immer. These divisions were determined by casting lots, which was a method of seeking God’s guidance in making decisions.
  • Historical background:
  • King David established the divisions of the priests and Levites to ensure the orderly worship and service in the temple.
  • The casting of lots was a common practice in the Old Testament to seek God’s will in making decisions. It was believed that the outcome of the lot was determined by God Himself (Proverbs 16:33).
  • Serving according to God’s plan:Each division had a specific role and responsibility in the temple. Similarly, God has given each of us unique gifts and talents to serve Him and His people. It is essential for us to discover and fulfil our God-given purpose.

Remember, while this verse may seem like a simple listing of names, it is part of the larger narrative of God’s plan for His people and can still provide valuable insights for our lives today.
