1 Chronicles 24:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: Therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the Priests office. 1 Chronicles 24:2 (KJV)

1 Chronicles 24:2 is a verse found in the Old Testament, specifically in the book of Chronicles. This verse provides historical context and details about the descendants of Aaron, who was the brother of Moses and the first high priest of Israel. To fully grasp the significance of this verse, it is helpful to examine the surrounding verses and the broader context of the chapter. In 1 Chronicles 24, the chapter begins by describing how David, the king of Israel, organised the priests and Levites into divisions to assist in the worship and service at the tabernacle or temple. This chapter primarily focuses on the divisions of the priests and their responsibilities. In verse 2, it mentions two individuals, Nadab and Abihu. These were the sons of Aaron, who were priests, though not high priest. However, in the book of Leviticus (Leviticus 10:1-2), Nadab and Abihu were struck dead by God for offering unauthorised fire before the Lord. Their death occurred when they brought an offering that did not follow the specific instructions given by God, thereby disobeying His command. The consequence of their disobedience was that they died without leaving any children. As a result, their brothers, Eleazar and Ithamar, took over the priestly duties that Nadab and Abihu would have carried out. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s instructions, especially in matters of worship and service. It emphasises the need for reverence and respect when approaching God and highlights the severe consequences that can arise from disregarding His commands. By mentioning the death of Nadab and Abihu, 1 Chronicles 24:2 emphasises the significance of the priestly responsibilities and the need for priests to carry out their duties faithfully. The verse further reinforces the establishment of the priestly lineage through Eleazar and Ithamar, who continued to execute the priest’s office according to God’s instructions. In summary, 1 Chronicles 24:2 recounts the tragic death of Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, due to their disobedience in their priestly duties. This verse underscores the importance of following God’s commands and highlights the role of Eleazar and Ithamar in continuing the priestly line and carrying out the priest’s office. “And the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, died before their father; and the priestly office was not given to them.”
