These

were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him. 1 Chronicles 24:19 (KJV)

Chronicles 24:19 belongs to a broader passage that records the organization and division of the priests and Levites for service in the temple. To grasp its significance we must first consider the surrounding context. In the Old Testament God commanded the Israelites to build a temple—referred to as the house of the LORD—in Jerusalem. The temple was the sacred centre where the people worshiped God and offered sacrifices in accordance with the Law. Central to the temple’s function was the service of the priests and Levites.

Chapter 24 of 1 Chronicles gives a detailed account of how King David arranged the priestly families into twenty‑four divisions, each assigned specific duties and periods of service. The priestly courses were drawn from the descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses and the first high priest, while the Levite courses were taken from the other Levite families of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. This structure was designed to guarantee that temple worship proceeded in an orderly and efficient manner.

Verse 19 specifically records that these “orderings” or divisions were established “according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.” The wording underscores that David and the people of Israel were following the divine instructions originally given to Moses and Aaron. While the priesthood itself originated with Aaron, the particular twenty‑four‑division system was a later development introduced by David, building on the earlier framework outlined in Exodus 28‑30 and Numbers 3‑4.

By adhering to God’s commands, David demonstrated his commitment to honouring the LORD and ensuring that worship and service were carried out exactly as prescribed. The verse therefore highlights the importance of obedience to divine instruction and the reverence due to the house of the LORD. It also stresses the continuity of spiritual heritage: the phrase “under Aaron their father” points to the lineage and privilege of Aaron’s descendants in maintaining the sacred duties of the priesthood and Levite service for successive generations.
