1 Chronicles 24:20
And the rest of the sons of Levi were these: Of the sons of Amram; Shubael: of the sons of Shubael; Jehdeiah.
1 Chronicles 24:20 (KJV)
Context
The book of 1 Chronicles records the history of God’s people, with a strong focus on worship and the proper order of temple service. This verse belongs to a larger list made during King David’s reign, when he organized the Levites into groups for their duties. The phrase “the rest of the sons of Levi” shows that this list includes those not named earlier, making the record complete.
The Levites were one of the twelve tribes of Israel, set apart by God for religious work. They did not receive a large territory like the other tribes; instead, they lived among them and served at the tabernacle and later the temple. Their tasks included assisting the priests, caring for sacred objects, and leading worship.
Meaning
This verse names specific descendants: from Amram came Shubael, and from Shubael came Jehdeiah. Amram is a significant figure because he was the father of Moses and Aaron. Aaron’s family became the priests, while Moses led Israel out of Egypt. This connection links the verse to the exodus generation and shows the continuity of God’s plan through families.
Shubael and Jehdeiah are not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture, and little is known about their personal deeds. Yet their names are preserved here, showing that God values every person who serves Him, even those whose work is not described in detail.
Biblical connections
The careful listing of names in this verse echoes the broader biblical theme that God knows His people individually. Just as He called Aaron and his sons to the priesthood, He also recorded the names of lesser-known Levites. This reflects the truth that God has a specific place for each person in His service, as seen in the New Testament teaching that every believer has a role in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:18).
Application
This verse encourages believers to serve faithfully in whatever role God gives them, even if that role seems small or unnoticed. The Levites who carried out routine duties were essential to worship, just as every act of service matters in God’s kingdom. God sees and remembers the work of those who are faithful, even when their names appear only briefly in His Word.
Reflection
The detailed records in 1 Chronicles remind us that God is a God of order and purpose. He does not overlook anyone. The mention of Shubael and Jehdeiah assures us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain, for He who calls us also remembers us.
