1 Chronicles 24:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Concerning Rehabiah, of the sons of Rehabiah, the first was Isshiah. 1 Chronicles 24:21 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that concentrates on the genealogy of the Israelites, the organization of the priesthood, and the preparation for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. Chapter 24 is devoted specifically to the divisions of the priests and Levites who were responsible for service in the house of the Lord. Verses 24:1–19 detail the priestly divisions, while verses 24:20–31 record the Levitical genealogy.

Verse 24:21 falls within this genealogical section and records the line of Rehabiah, stating that the firstborn son of Rehabiah was Isshiah. The verse is part of a broader list that traces the descendants of the priestly tribe, helping to establish the line of descendants within the priestly family.

The passage also mentions other Levitical clans, for example “Of the sons of Kohath, Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel,” illustrating the detailed recording of family lines that characterizes this chapter. Such genealogical information serves to document the lineage and organization of the priests and Levites rather than to convey a direct theological message or moral teaching.

It is important to note that this particular verse, like the surrounding verses, primarily functions as a record of lineage. The emphasis in this section of 1 Chronicles is on the organization and roles within the priesthood, providing a structural framework for the service that would later be carried out in the temple. By preserving these family lines, the text ensures that the proper priestly families could be identified for their appointed duties, underscoring the significance of orderly worship in ancient Israel.
