1 Chronicles 24:28

Of Mahli

came Eleazar, who had no sons. 1 Chronicles 24:28 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record of the lineage of the Israelites, particularly focusing on the reign of King David. Chapter 24 deals with the division of the priests and Levites into their respective divisions for service in the tabernacle and later in the temple. The verse in question provides details about the responsibilities of certain Levitical families and the genealogical background of those families.

Mahli was a descendant of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The verse states that Eleazar came of Mahli and that he had no sons, indicating that this branch of the family did not continue through male offspring. This brief notice fits within a larger passage (1 Chronicles 24:25‑27) that records the lineage of several Levitical families. In that passage Eleazar is said to have fathered Phinehas, and Phinehas fathered Abishua, showing the continuation of the Mahli line through other members of the family.

Concerning Kish, the text records that the son of Kish was Jerahmeel. Kish, like Mahli, was also descended from Levi. Jerahmeel is mentioned in other biblical passages in connection with certain family lines and cities, underscoring the broader network of Levitical families that were organized for temple service.

These genealogical notes are not merely historical; they served a practical purpose in the organization of priestly service. By recording who belonged to which family and noting where a line ended, the chronicler ensured that the divisions of the priests and Levites could be administered accurately, preserving the proper order of worship in the tabernacle and later in the temple.
