1 Chronicles 24:29

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Concerning Kish: the sonne of Kish was Ierahmeel. 1 Chronicles 24:29 (KJV)

“The sons also of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.” 1 Chronicles 24:29 is found within a genealogical record that describes the divisions of the Levitical priests. In this verse the focus is on the descendants of Merari, one of the three sons of Levi, the other two being Gershon and Kohath. The sons of Merari mentioned here are Mahli and Mushi. Mahli is further identified in 1 Chronicles 23:21‑22 as the father of Eleazar and Kish, and Kish is noted as the father of Jerahmeel.

These names record the genealogy and lineage of the Levitical priests who served in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple. The purpose of such genealogical records was to establish the order and responsibilities of the Levites in their service to God. Each division of priests had specific duties, and the listings ensured that priestly functions were carried out in an organized and orderly manner.

Although this single verse may not carry major theological or doctrinal weight on its own, it forms part of the larger historical and genealogical account found throughout Chronicles. The genealogies throughout Scripture preserve the lineage of key figures—priests, kings, and prophets—and safeguard the history and heritage of Israel.

By studying and understanding these genealogical records we gain insight into the importance of heritage, continuity, and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises across generations. The passage reminds us of the intricate tapestry of God’s plan and how He worked through specific individuals and families to accomplish His purposes.
