1 Chronicles 25:11

The fourth to Izri, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve:

1 Chronicles 25:11 (KJV)

This verse appears in a list of twenty-four divisions of temple musicians. David and the Levite leaders set apart these groups by lot, so each served in turn. The fourth lot fell to Izri, whose group included his sons and his brethren, twelve in all. The chapter records this arrangement to show that worship in Israel was carefully organized, not left to chance.

The name Izri also appears as Zeri in some translations, reflecting a minor textual variant. The phrase “he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve” reveals a consistent structure: each division had a leader, his family, and his close relatives serving together. The number twelve provided a full complement for the musical duties. While the text does not explain its symbolism, twelve often represents completeness or order in Scripture. The repeated pattern across the chapter underscores that God values consistency and careful planning in worship.

The chapter states that these musicians prophesied with harps, psalteries, and cymbals. Their service was a form of inspired praise, not mere entertainment. The casting of lots, involving both the master and the scholar, shows that God values order in worship. This principle is consistent with the broader biblical teaching that worship should be done decently and in order. The chronicler’s detailed record also reminds us that God takes note of those who serve, even when their names are not widely known.

For believers today, this verse teaches that faithful service matters, even when it seems small or routine. God notices those who serve in worship, just as the chronicler recorded each name and division. Families also have a place in ministry. When parents and children serve together, they pass on a legacy of devotion and skill. The church still needs people who will lead music, teach, and support worship with diligence. Consider how your own gifts can be used in an orderly way for God’s glory.

  • Serve with consistency, knowing that God values faithful participation.

  • Encourage family members to join you in worship and service.

  • Support the church’s worship with a willing and prepared heart.

Consider your own place in the body of Christ. You may not lead a division of twelve, but your contribution is known to God. Serve with the same commitment that Izri and his household showed. Let your worship be orderly, heartfelt, and passed on to the next generation. God sees the quiet work done behind the scenes, and He honors those who serve Him faithfully.
