1 Chronicles 25:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The twelfth to Hashabiah, he, his sonnes and his brethren, were twelue: 1 Chronicles 25:19 (KJV)

he, his sons, and his brethren,

were twelve: 1 Chronicles 25:19 (KJV)

“Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun; Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the hands of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp, to give thanks and to praise the Lord.” This verse is part of a larger passage that describes the organization of the musicians in the service of worship for the Ark in Jerusalem, and also in the tabernacle and later in the temple in Jerusalem. David, the renowned king of Israel, had appointed skilled musicians to lead the people in worshiping God through music. 1 Chronicles 25 provides a detailed account of the divisions of musicians and their respective duties. Verse 19 specifically mentions the sons of Jeduthun, who were among those responsible for leading the praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. Jeduthun, their father, is noted as one who prophesied with a harp.

Jeduthun: Jeduthun is believed to be one of the three leaders of the temple musicians, alongside Asaph and Heman. He is often referred to as a seer or prophet and is credited with composing several psalms found in the book of Psalms (Psalm 39, 62, and 77). Jeduthun’s role was not limited to music but encompassed prophetic utterance as well.

Musical Worship: The verse highlights the integral role of music in worship. The musicians, under the leadership of Jeduthun, used harps to give thanks and praise to the Lord. Their purpose was to create an atmosphere of worship, helping the people of Israel express their adoration and gratitude to God.

Prophetic Connection: It is interesting to note that Jeduthun is mentioned as prophesying with a harp. This suggests that his music was not merely a form of entertainment or expression, but a means through which God’s message and revelation could be conveyed. It emphasizes the spiritual significance of music and its potential to facilitate divine communication.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 25:19 highlights the importance of music in worship and the significant role of Jeduthun and his sons in leading the people of Israel in praising and thanking the Lord. It demonstrates the close relationship between music, prophecy, and worship in the context of the Ark, the tabernacle, and the later temple.
