1 Chronicles 25:20

The thirteenth to Shubael, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve:

1 Chronicles 25:20 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a chapter describing how David and the Levite leaders organized the temple musicians. The Levites were the tribe set apart to serve God in the tabernacle and later in the temple. Their duties included helping the priests, leading worship, and caring for sacred items. The chapter lists twenty-four groups, or courses, of musicians who served in rotation.

The thirteenth course was assigned to Shubael, along with his sons and relatives, and together they numbered twelve. The number twelve often represents completeness and order in Israel’s worship. Each course had the same size, showing that every family group received equal responsibility and honor. The casting of lots, mentioned earlier in the chapter, ensured that assignments were made fairly and under God’s direction.

Shubael appears elsewhere as a descendant of Gershom, the son of Levi (1 Chronicles 23:16; 24:20). This confirms his Levitical lineage and his rightful place in temple service. The organization of worship in Chronicles reflects the care God’s people took to honor Him in an orderly way.

This list may seem simple, but it teaches that every person and family has a meaningful role in worship. Not all service is visible or prominent, yet each part is necessary. God values faithful participation, whether in leading music or in quieter tasks. Believers today can serve with dedication, knowing that their contribution matters to God and to the community of faith.

Consider the service God has entrusted to you. Even if your role appears small or routine, He sees it and uses it for His glory. Like Shubael and his family, you are part of a larger plan that honors God through faithful, orderly worship. Your place in God’s work is not accidental. He has given you gifts and opportunities to serve. When you serve with a willing heart, you join a long line of faithful people. God notices the work done quietly and faithfully. He weaves every act of service into His greater purpose. Take encouragement from this simple record. Your name may not be famous, but it is written in God’s book. He remembers those who serve Him. Let this truth give you joy and strength for today. Serve gladly, knowing that God sees and rewards all faithful work.
