1 Chronicles 26:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:31
Listen to this article

“All these were the sons of Obed-edom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, were threescore and two of Obed-edom.”

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s start by looking at the context. The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and is a historical account that traces the genealogy and history of the Israelites, particularly the lineage of King David. Chapter 26 specifically focuses on the divisions of gatekeepers and their duties in the service of the temple.

Obed-edom:In this verse, the attention is drawn to Obed-edom and his descendants. Obed-edom was a Levite from the clan of the Korahites, and he played a significant role in the service of the temple. Earlier in 1 Chronicles 15:18, we learn that Obed-edom was entrusted with the care of the Ark of the Covenant in his house for a time.

Able men for strength:The verse emphasizes that Obed-edom’s sons, their sons, and their relatives were “able men for strength for the service.” This indicates that they were physically strong and capable of fulfilling their duties in the service of the temple. Their responsibilities likely included guarding the temple, maintaining order, and assisting in the various tasks related to worship.

Threescore and two:The verse concludes by stating that the total number of able men from the descendants of Obed-edom was sixty-two. This highlights the significant contribution of Obed-edom’s family to the service of the temple and the importance of their role in supporting the worship of God.

  • Additionally, this verse reminds us that no matter how small or seemingly insignificant our role may be, it is vital in the context of God’s kingdom. Obed-edom’s contribution might not have been as prominent as that of kings or priests, but his faithfulness and the commitment of his family made a difference in the worship of God and the maintenance of the temple.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 26:5 provides a glimpse into the service of Obed-edom and his descendants in the temple. It underscores their physical strength and capability for service, highlighting their commitment and contribution.
