1 Chronicles 26:4
Moreouer the sonnes of Obed-Edom were Shemaiah the first borne, Iehozabad the second, Ioah the thirde, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth. 1 Chronicles 26:4 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles belongs to the Old Testament and serves as a historical record of Israel, emphasizing genealogies, the reigns of kings, and the establishment of the temple in Jerusalem. Chapter 26 specifically highlights the divisions of the gatekeepers, who were charged with the security and orderly conduct of worship within the temple.
In this verse the sons of Obed‑edom are named: Shemaiah, Jehozabad, Joah, Sacar, and Nethaneel. Their inclusion establishes a clear lineage and demonstrates their involvement in the service of God’s house. Obed‑edom himself is known elsewhere (2 Samuel 6:10‑12) as a Levite and a faithful gatekeeper, and his family’s record here underscores the importance of preserving the names of those who ministered at the temple.
Obed‑edom’s faithfulness is noteworthy. He diligently fulfilled his duties in safeguarding the sanctuary, providing a model for believers to serve God faithfully in whatever capacity they are called. The mention of his many sons also reflects God’s blessings; in biblical culture a large family was often viewed as a sign of divine favor and prosperity. This reminds us that obedience and devotion can invite God’s provision for us and our descendants.
The passage teaches the value of every individual’s contribution to God’s work. Even roles that seem small or unnoticed, such as gatekeeping, are vital to the overall functioning of the community of believers. By honoring each task, the body of Christ operates in harmony.
Application:
- Faithfulness in Service – Like Obed‑edom, we are encouraged to be diligent in the tasks God entrusts to us, recognizing that every service, large or small, matters to the kingdom.
- Trusting in God’s Blessings – The blessing of many sons points to God’s faithfulness in rewarding devotion; we can trust that He provides according to His perfect timing.
- Embracing Our Calling – Every believer has a unique purpose within God’s plan. Embracing our specific role, however modest, contributes to advancing God’s kingdom.
Studying this verse and its context offers insight into the significance of faithfulness, the reality of divine blessings, and the indispensable value of each person’s contribution in serving God’s house.
