Context

This verse appears in a list of gatekeeper families in 1 Chronicles 26. King David organized the Levites for service in the temple that his son Solomon would build. The gatekeepers guarded the doors and kept the house of God orderly and secure. Obed-edom was a Levite from the clan of the Korahites, set apart for sacred work. His name appears earlier in 2 Samuel 6:10-12, where he kept the Ark of the Covenant in his house after David first brought it toward Jerusalem. Because of that faithful care, God blessed his household.

Meaning

The verse names five of Obed-edom’s eight sons: Shemaiah, Jehozabad, Joah, Sacar, and Nethaneel. The next verse, 1 Chronicles 26:5, completes the list and adds the reason: “for God blessed him.” These names are not just a family record. They show that Obed-edom’s devotion to the Ark produced lasting fruit. His sons served as gatekeepers too, continuing the work of worship in God’s house. In biblical culture, many children were a sign of divine favor. Here that favor is tied directly to faithful service.
