2 Samuel 6:11
And the ark of the Lord continued in the house of Obed–edom the Gittite three months: and the Lord blessed Obed–edom, and all his household.
2 Samuel 6:11 (KJV)
Context
After the Philistines returned the Ark of the Covenant to Israel, it rested in the house of Abinadab in Kiriath-jearim. King David later tried to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, but the first attempt ended in tragedy when Uzzah touched the Ark and died. Fearing the Lord, David diverted the Ark to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite, where it remained for three months.
Meaning
The Ark was the most holy object among God’s people, representing His very presence. It contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod that budded, and a jar of manna (see Exodus 25; Hebrews 9). Obed-edom was a Levite from Gath-rimmon, a Levitical city, and his family later served as gate-keepers (1 Chronicles 26:4-5). During those three months, the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household. This blessing shows that God’s presence, though holy and demanding reverence, also brings favor to those who receive it with faith. The blessing was not limited to spiritual matters; it extended to all that he had, showing that God cares for the whole life of those who honor Him.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 13:14 confirms that the Lord blessed Obed-edom’s household and all that he had, emphasizing the complete nature of the blessing. This episode prepared the way for David’s later successful transfer of the Ark to Jerusalem, as he learned to approach God with proper reverence. The narrative also echoes the principle that godliness has the promise of both spiritual and temporal blessings, as seen in Obed-edom’s experience.
Application
God’s presence brings blessing; when we open our hearts and homes to Him, He bestows favor. Hosting God’s presence carries responsibility, and Obed-edom’s willingness to honor the Ark reminds believers to receive and revere God earnestly. The episode also testifies to God’s faithfulness; He rewards those who are obedient and faithful. We can welcome God’s presence into our daily routines, trusting that His blessing accompanies it, even in times of uncertainty or past failure.
Reflection
Consider how you welcome God’s presence into your home and daily life. Trust that His blessing accompanies His presence, even in times of uncertainty or past failure.
