1 Chronicles 27:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Of Dan, Azariel the sonne of Ieroham. These were the princes of the tribes of Israel. 1 Chronicles 27:22 (KJV)

“Now for the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites was Meshelemiah the son of Kore.”

The book of 1 Chronicles is primarily concerned with chronicling the history of Israel, emphasizing the genealogies of the tribes, the establishment of the Davidic dynasty, and the organization of temple worship. In chapter 26 the focus includes listing the various administrative roles and divisions within the temple, including the porters. The verse highlights the specific division of the porters or gatekeepers, who were responsible for guarding the entrances and gates of the temple and the king’s palace. They played a crucial role in maintaining security and order.

The passage identifies Meshelemiah as the son of Kore, a Korhite, and a member of the division of porters. The Korhites were descendants of Korah, a prominent Levitical family, and were responsible for various duties in the service of the temple. The verse also mentions that Meshelemiah belonged to the sons of Asaph. Asaph was a famous musician and singer during the time of King David, and his descendants played significant roles in the musical aspect of worship in the temple.

Although the verse may seem relatively obscure and focused on administrative details, it serves as a reminder of the importance of organization, order, and dedicated service within the worship of God. It highlights the roles played by different families and individuals in ensuring the proper functioning of the temple and the reverence of the worship practices. Overall, 1 Chronicles 26:1 helps us understand the historical and organisational aspects of temple worship during the time of David. While the verse does not present direct theological arguments, it underscores the meticulous care taken in the administration of God’s house and the involvement of various individuals and families in fulfilling their respective duties.
