1 Chronicles 27:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the Lord had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.”

Historical Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the genealogy of the Israelites and the reign of King David. In this particular verse, it highlights David’s decision not to count the number of men in Israel who were twenty years old and younger.

David’s Census:Prior to this verse, David had conducted a census of Israel, which resulted in God’s anger and brought about a severe punishment (1 Chronicles 21). David realised his mistake and repented before God. As a consequence, God sent a plague upon the nation, resulting in the death of thousands. This event emphasised the importance of relying on God’s providence rather than on human strength.

Trusting God’s Promise:In 1 Chronicles 27:23, David demonstrates a change in his approach. He chooses not to count the young men of Israel because he believed in God’s promise to increase Israel like the stars of the heavens. David’s decision showed that he had learned from his previous mistake and now relied on God’s faithfulness rather than his own military might.

God’s Promise to Abraham:The reference to increasing Israel like the stars of the heavens alludes to God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 15: God had assured Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. By trusting in this promise, David acknowledges his faith in God’s covenant with Abraham and recognises that God will fulfil His promises.
