1 Chronicles 29:24
And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
1 Chronicles 29:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the book of 1 Chronicles. It records the moment when David, near the end of his life, hands the kingdom to his son Solomon. David had wanted to build the temple, but God did not allow him. Instead, David gathered materials and made careful preparations. Now the leaders of Israel accept Solomon as king. This is the formal transition of power, a peaceful and orderly succession.
Meaning
The groups named here represent the whole nation. The “princes” are tribal leaders and officials. The “mighty men” are the warriors who served David. “All the sons likewise of king David” shows that even his own children recognized Solomon’s authority. The Hebrew phrase behind “submitted themselves” means “gave the hand under” Solomon, a gesture of swearing obedience and loyalty. This was not mere outward compliance but a formal act of allegiance. David’s sons were older than Solomon, yet they willingly placed themselves under his authority, honoring God’s choice.
Biblical connections
This peaceful transfer stands in contrast to earlier struggles. Adonijah, another son of David, later tried to seize the throne (1 Kings 1:5). Yet here the leaders willingly accept God’s choice. Their submission shows that God’s promise to David was being fulfilled. The people’s willing offerings and the leaders’ willing submission together show a nation united in carrying out God’s purposes for the temple and the kingdom.
Application
We learn that God’s plans often move through orderly human steps. David prepared, and the people responded. When we accept God’s appointed leaders and purposes, we help bring about His will. Submission is not weakness; it is wise cooperation with God’s direction. It is a formal promise of allegiance, not just outward obedience.
Reflection
Do we willingly place ourselves under God’s authority, even when His choice differs from our expectations? The leaders’ example calls us to trust God’s wisdom and support those He has placed over us.
