1 Chronicles 3:1

Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess:

1 Chronicles 3:1 (KJV)

This verse opens a genealogical record in 1 Chronicles that traces the family line of David, Israel’s king. Hebron was David’s first capital before he captured Jerusalem. The list of sons born there shows the beginning of his royal household. This record is part of a larger account that emphasizes the importance of lineage and God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises to David.

Amnon, the firstborn, was the son of Ahinoam from Jezreel. Daniel, the second, was the son of Abigail from Carmel. Abigail had been the wife of Nabal before she married David (1 Samuel 25:3). The names and places confirm the historical reality of David’s family. The verse also highlights the reality of David’s polygamous household, a practice common in the ancient Near East but not God’s original design.

Amnon’s later crime against his half-sister Tamar is recorded in 2 Samuel 13. That tragedy shows that even the royal line was not free from sin. The genealogy also points forward to Jesus Christ, who descended from David according to the flesh. God kept His covenant promise to David through this family line. This verse, while seemingly a simple list, is a vital link in the biblical narrative, connecting the history of Israel’s monarchy to the coming of the promised Savior.

David had many wives, a practice common in the ancient Near East but not God’s original design. This household arrangement brought grief and conflict. Believers today can learn that following cultural customs over God’s commands leads to pain. God’s design for marriage and family is good, and we honor Him by living according to His ways.

God works through imperfect people and broken families to accomplish His purposes. The presence of sin in David’s house did not stop God’s plan. This verse reminds us that God remains faithful even when human failure is evident. His covenant promises stand firm, and His purposes are never thwarted by our weakness.
