1 Chronicles 3:9

These were all the sonnes of Dauid: beside the sonnes of the concubines, and Tamar their sister. 1 Chronicles 3:9 (KJV)

Chronicles 3 provides a genealogical record of the descendants of King David, who was a prominent figure in the Old Testament and the ancestor of Jesus Christ. This specific verse focuses on the sons of David, excluding the sons born to his concubines, as well as mentioning Tamar, David’s daughter.

The verse emphasizes that the list of descendants mentioned in this chapter are the sons of David. It highlights the continuation of David’s family line, which was significant because the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would eventually come from the lineage of David.

The verse also mentions that the sons of David listed here exclude the sons of his concubines. In ancient times, kings often had concubines, who were secondary wives or female companions. However, the inheritance and status of the children born to concubines were often different from those born to the primary wife. This verse indicates that the genealogy in this chapter focuses primarily on the descendants from David’s primary wife or wives.

The verse concludes by mentioning Tamar, who was the daughter of David. Tamar’s story is recorded in the book of 2 Samuel (2 Samuel 13:1-22). She experienced a tragic incident involving her half-brother Amnon, which resulted in her dishonor. Tamar’s inclusion in this genealogy reminds readers of her connection to David’s family and the consequences of the events that unfolded.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 3:9 highlights the importance of David’s lineage and provides a genealogical record of his sons. It also serves as a reminder of the complexity and challenges faced within David’s family, as demonstrated by the mention of Tamar. As with any genealogical passage, it is essential to consider the historical context and the significance of the individuals mentioned in relation to the overarching narrative of the Bible.
