1 Chronicles 4:9
And Iabez was more honourable then his brethren: and his mother called his name Iabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 1 Chronicles 4:9 (KJV)
Jabez appears in the genealogy of Judah, yet unlike the brief mentions of many ancestors, the Scripture singles him out as “more honourable than his brethren.” His mother named him Jabez, a word meaning “pain” or “sorrow,” because she bore him under difficult circumstances. This brief background sets the stage for the heartfelt prayer that follows.
The prayer itself is recorded in 1 Chronicles 4:10: “And Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, ‘Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me.’” In these words Jabez acknowledges his total dependence on God, asks for divine favour, seeks an expansion of his influence or resources, requests God’s continual presence, and petitions for protection against the harms of sin.
From this prayer we draw several clear lessons. First, Jabez’s request for blessing shows a recognition that every good thing comes from God and that we must earnestly seek His favour. Second, his desire for enlargement—whether understood as greater territory, influence, or opportunity—demonstrates a god‑centered ambition to use increased resources for His purposes. Third, the plea for God’s hand to be with him reflects a deep longing for divine guidance, protection, and provision in every circumstance. Finally, his petition to be kept from evil reveals an awareness of the destructive power of sin and a trust that God can shield us from its grief.
The narrative records that God answered Jabez’s prayer. The following verse (1 Chronicles 4:11) notes that God gave him increase, even beyond what he asked, confirming that his sincere petition was honoured.
Application for today follows naturally. We are reminded to depend on God in every area of life, trusting that He is the source of all blessings. Like Jabez, we should boldly ask God for favour and provision, confident that He can meet our needs. We can also pray for God to enlarge our influence, resources, and opportunities so that we might serve Him more effectively. Seeking God’s hand means inviting His guidance, protection, and provision into the details of our daily walk. Relying on His protection encourages us to trust that He will keep us from the evil that surrounds us. Finally, the story of Jabez underscores God’s faithfulness and limitless grace—He answers prayers in powerful, generous, and sometimes unexpected ways. May this example inspire hope, confidence, and gratitude as we bring our own petitions before the God of Israel.
