1 Chronicles 5:15

Listen to this article

Ahi the sonne of Abdiel, the sonne of Guni, chiefe of the house of their fathers. 1 Chronicles 5:15 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the extensive genealogical record presented in the book of 1 Chronicles. 1 and 2 Chronicles together give a historical account of Israel from the time of Adam through the Babylonian exile and the subsequent return. In this particular entry, Ahi is identified as the son of Abdiel and the grandson of Guni, and he is described as the chief or leader of the house of their fathers.

Although genealogical lists can appear repetitive and may seem to have limited spiritual significance, they serve several important purposes. First, they preserve history by recording the lineage of Israel’s families and tribes, providing a vital link between generations and establishing each family’s ancestral heritage. Second, genealogies were crucial in ancient Israelite society for determining tribal affiliation, inheritance rights, priestly eligibility, and even the Davidic line that undergirds the Messianic promise. Third, beyond their historical function, these records can offer spiritual lessons; they remind believers of the value of family, the responsibility of leadership, and the continuity of God’s covenant people.

While 1 Chronicles 5:15 does not contain an explicit theological or moral teaching, it contributes to the broader narrative and deepens our understanding of Israel’s people and their organization. To gain a fuller appreciation of this verse, readers are encouraged to examine the surrounding passages and cross‑reference related scriptures. Such study broadens context, enriches interpretation, and helps uncover the ways even brief genealogical notes fit into the grand tapestry of God’s redemptive history.
