1 Chronicles 5:16
And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan, and in her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, upon their borders.
1 Chronicles 5:16 (KJV)
Context
The book of 1 Chronicles gives a historical account of Israel, emphasizing genealogies, kings, and the temple. Chapter 5 records the genealogy of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, who settled east of the Jordan River.
Meaning
This verse records that the Gadites, the “they” of the preceding context, dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan and its towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, upon their borders. Gilead was a mountainous region east of the Jordan, noted for rich pasturelands. Bashan lay north of Gilead, a fertile area with rich soil suitable for agriculture and livestock. The “suburbs of Sharon” refers to pasturelands; there were two Sharons, one west near the Mediterranean, but the one here is east beyond Jordan. The verse emphasizes the settled habitation of these tribes in fertile lands suitable for their herds.
Biblical connections
This settlement was part of the inheritance allotted after the conquest of Sihon and Og (Numbers 21:21-35), when the tribes requested to remain in the territories they had captured east of the Jordan because the lands were ideal for their livestock. By naming specific locations, the passage underscores the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes, each receiving the inheritance promised by God.
Application
The chronicler highlights this settlement to stress the distinct yet integral position of these eastern tribes. Though they lived apart from the western tribes, they remained part of the Israelite nation and retained their identity as God’s chosen people. The genealogical and territorial records in Chronicles remind Israel of its heritage and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises.
Reflection
God’s provision of a place for His people underscores His faithfulness in giving the tribes their inheritance. Just as the eastern tribes received their allotted land, believers today can trust that God faithfully provides for His people according to His promises.
