Numbers 21:21

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

Numbers 21:21 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. In Numbers 21, the people have wandered for many years and have just won a victory over the Canaanite king of Arad. Now they continue their march. The Amorites were a powerful Canaanite people living east of the Jordan River. Their king, Sihon, ruled from the city of Heshbon, which he had earlier taken from the Moabites.

Israel sent messengers to Sihon with a request. The act of sending messengers shows that the Israelites did not want war. They sought a peaceful passage through Amorite territory. This was a wise and respectful approach. Instead of attacking, they chose to communicate. The verse begins a larger conversation, and the following verses record Sihon’s refusal and the battle that followed. Israel’s initiative reveals their desire to avoid unnecessary conflict and to deal honestly with a neighboring nation.

This event is remembered later in Scripture. In Judges 11:19, Jephthah recalls that Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, asking for passage through his land. That reference confirms the importance of this moment in Israel’s history. It also shows that the people of God consistently sought to act peacefully before any military action. The same principle appears in Deuteronomy 2, where Moses explains that Israel asked for permission to pass through the land of Edom and Moab as well.

This verse teaches believers to pursue peace in their dealings with others. Before responding with force or anger, we should seek clear communication and respectful negotiation. Israel did not assume that Sihon would be hostile. They gave him the opportunity to respond. In our own conflicts, we can follow this example by speaking directly and honestly, while trusting God to guide the outcome. This does not mean we ignore danger, but it means we choose the path of peace whenever possible.

Israel’s action also reflects their trust in God’s guidance. They did not act impulsively or out of fear. They moved forward with confidence, knowing that God was leading them. When we face obstacles on our journey, we can remember that God sees our path. We can approach each challenge with wisdom and calm, believing that He will provide what we need. This verse encourages us to walk in faith, treating others with respect and relying on God’s provision at every step.
