1 Chronicles 6:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

Eliab his sonne, Ieroham his sonne, Elkanah his sonne. 1 Chronicles 6:27 (KJV)

The verse belongs to the sixth chapter of 1 Chronicles, a historical record that emphasizes the genealogies of Israel, especially the tribes of Judah and Levi. In this passage the genealogy of the Levitical priesthood is presented, tracing the line of Aaron’s descendants who served in the tabernacle and later in the temple at Jerusalem. The three names recorded are Eleazar, Phinehas, and Abishua.

Eleazar was the son of Aaron, the original high priest during the wilderness wanderings. After Aaron’s death Eleazar succeeded him as high priest and led the people in worship. His name means “God has helped.” Phinehas, Eleazar’s son and Aaron’s grandson, is noted for his zeal. In Numbers 25 he halted a plague by killing an Israelite man and a Moabite woman who were openly defiling the covenant, an act for which God granted him a covenant of peace and promised a perpetual priesthood to his descendants. The name Phinehas is associated with zeal and loyalty to God. Abishua, the son of Phinehas and grandson of Eleazar, is mentioned only in genealogical lists; his name means “my father is salvation.” Though little else is recorded about him, his inclusion confirms the continuity of the priestly line.

This genealogy underscores the unbroken succession of the Aaronic priesthood from generation to generation, highlighting the importance of the Levites in maintaining Israel’s worship and rituals. By recording these names, 1 Chronicles affirms the legitimacy of the priestly service and reminds the reader of the divine covenant attached to this lineage.
