1 Chronicles 6:28
And the sons of Samuel; the firstborn Vashni, and Abiah.
1 Chronicles 6:28 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in a genealogy of the Levites, the tribe set apart for worship in Israel. It traces the Kohathite line, the family from which priests came, and lists Samuel’s sons within that record. Samuel himself was a Kohathite, which explains his lifelong service in the Tabernacle.
Meaning
The KJV names Samuel’s firstborn as Vashni and his second as Abiah. Many other translations read “Joel” for the firstborn. The difference likely comes from a Hebrew phrase meaning “and his second,” which early copyists may have mistaken for a name. Some ancient manuscripts and 1 Samuel 8:2 support the reading “Joel.” The verse is brief, but it places Samuel firmly in the priestly line.
Biblical connections
Samuel served as prophet, priest, and judge, anointing both Saul and David as kings. Yet 1 Samuel 8:1-3 records that his sons did not follow his example; they took bribes and perverted justice. Their failure led Israel to demand a king. This contrast shows that a faithful servant of God can still have children who go astray, and the failures of leaders can bring national consequences.
Application
Godly heritage does not guarantee personal faithfulness. Each generation must choose to follow God for itself. Parents can teach and model obedience, but children bear their own responsibility before Him. Spiritual leadership carries weight, yet every believer must own his or her faith personally.
Reflection
This short list reminds us that God works through imperfect families and ordinary history. Even when human leaders fail, His purposes continue through those who remain faithful. The record of Samuel’s sons invites us to examine our own walk with God, not merely our family background.
