1 Chronicles 6:60
And out of the tribe of Beniamin, Geba with her suburbes, and Alemeth with her suburbes, Anathoth with her suburbes. All their cities throughout their families were thirteene cities. 1 Chronicles 6:60 (KJV)
This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Joshua (Joshua 21:19) that records the cities assigned to the Levites, who were a tribe within Israel set apart for service in the tabernacle and later the temple. The Levites had specific responsibilities related to worship, including offering sacrifices, maintaining the temple, and assisting the priests.
In this particular verse, it mentions the cities allotted within the territory of the tribe of Benjamin, which was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The cities mentioned here were given to Levites who were assigned cities within Benjamin’s tribal allotment as their inheritance. These cities were intended to serve as dwelling places for the Levites and their families.
The verse lists three cities: Geba, Alemeth, and Anathoth. The surrounding suburbs provided pastureland and agricultural resources that supported the inhabitants. These cities were surrounded by suburbs or pasturelands, which were likely used for livestock and agriculture to sustain the Levites.
It is worth noting that Anathoth is also recognised as the hometown of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:1), who played a significant role in the Old Testament.
The verse concludes by stating that there were thirteen cities in total, referring to the number of cities given to the Levites from the tribe of Benjamin. This verse, along with the surrounding passages, highlights the careful allocation of Levitical cities recorded in Joshua. These records helped to establish the distribution of Levitical inheritance among the tribes, contributing to the orderly functioning of Israel’s worship system.
While this particular verse may seem more focused on historical and geographical details, it is part of the broader narrative that underscores God’s faithfulness to His covenant people and the importance of maintaining the roles and responsibilities assigned to the Levites in worship and service to God.
