1 Chronicles 6:59

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And Ashan with her suburbes, and Beth-shemesh with her suburbes. 1 Chronicles 6:59 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that focuses on the genealogy and lineage of the Israelite tribes, particularly the tribe of Levi. Chapter 6 contains a detailed account of the genealogy of the Levitical families, including the roles and responsibilities of each family within the service of the tabernacle and later the temple. The Levites held a unique position among the Israelites, as they were chosen by God to serve in the tabernacle and later the temple. Their responsibilities included various tasks related to the worship and service of God.

While some passages have been cited that incorrectly attribute certain relationships to Kish, Jerahmeel, and Hebron, those connections are not supported by the canonical books of the Bible. Kish is mentioned in 1 Samuel 9:1 as the father of Saul and does not appear as the father of Jerahmeel. Jerahmeel is listed in 1 Chronicles 6:28 as a descendant of Merari, a son of Levi, and there is no biblical record linking him to Moses or to Hebron. Hebron is a city named after the patriarch Hebron (Genesis 23:2), not a person descended from Jerahmeel.

The genealogies in 1 Chronicles 6 accurately describe the descent of the Levites from Aaron and their duties in worship and service to God. These genealogies remain valuable for understanding the organization of the Levitical priesthood and its significance in Israelite religious life. By studying the detailed lineages and the associated ministerial functions, readers gain insight into how the priestly service was structured, how responsibilities were assigned among the families, and how this structure supported the worship of Yahweh throughout Israel’s history.
