1 Chronicles 7:7

And the sons of Bela; Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour; and were reckoned by their genealogies twenty and two thousand and thirty and four.

1 Chronicles 7:7 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical account of the genealogies and events of the Israelites, particularly focusing on the lineage of David and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty. Chapter 7 provides a detailed genealogy of the descendants of Benjamin, one of the twelve sons of Jacob.

Bela was one of the three sons of Benjamin listed in the preceding verse (1 Chronicles 7:6). In this verse, the sons of Bela are named: Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri. These five are described as “heads of the house of their fathers,” meaning they were leaders or principal men within their family and tribal groups. They are also called “mighty men of valour,” a designation that identifies them as courageous warriors or fighting men.

The verse further explains that these descendants of Bela were counted and recorded according to their genealogies, resulting in a total of 22,034 individuals. This number indicates the size and prominence of the family of Bela among the tribes of Israel, emphasizing the significant growth and multiplication of this family line.

Some commentators note that the names in 1 Chronicles 8:3-5 differ slightly, suggesting that these five may be grandsons of Bela, but the text presents them as his sons. This verse highlights the importance of family heritage, leadership, and military strength within the nation of Israel.

This genealogy reminds us that God values each family line and records His people individually. It encourages believers to take seriously their roles as leaders in their households and to cultivate courage and faithfulness in their calling.

Consider how your own family heritage and spiritual lineage are part of God’s larger plan. Even when names and numbers seem distant, God knows and cares for every generation that faithfully follows Him.
