1 Chronicles 8:38

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel.”

Historical Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a part of the Old Testament and provides a historical account of the genealogy and reigns of the kings of Israel, particularly focusing on the tribe of Judah. Chapter 8 specifically lists the genealogy of the tribe of Benjamin, recounting the descendants of Benjamin, one of Jacob’s sons.

  • The Importance of Genealogy:

Genealogical records were significant in ancient Israel as they established lineage, inheritance rights, and tribal affiliations. The chronicling of genealogies in the Bible served to authenticate and validate the heritage and identity of the people.

Azel and His Six Sons:In 1 Chronicles 8:38, we encounter a brief mention of Azel, who had six sons: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. While the verse does not provide extensive details about them, it highlights the descendants of Azel, establishing their place within the lineage of Benjamin.

Significance of Names:

Names in the Bible often carry symbolic meanings or reflect the circumstances surrounding a person’s birth or character. While the verse does not elaborate on the specific meanings behind the names of Azel’s sons, their names are still noteworthy as they represent the identities of these individuals within their historical context.

  • A Testament to God’s Promises:

The mention of Azel and his sons is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to the promises made to the patriarchs, particularly Jacob (Israel) and his sons. The preservation of the genealogical records and the mention of these individuals signify the continuity of God’s covenantal relationship with His people, ensuring the fulfillment of His promises.

Lessons for Today:

  • While this verse may appear to be a simple genealogical record, it reminds us of the importance of recognizing our heritage and understanding our place within the broader narrative of God’s redemptive plan. It also encourages us to reflect on the faithfulness of God throughout history and recognize the significance of even the seemingly ordinary individuals in fulfilling His purposes.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 8:38 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of the tribe of Benjamin, specifically highlighting Azel and his six sons. While limited information is given about them, this verse underscores the importance of genealogies and serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness in preserving His people and fulfilling His promises.
