1 Chronicles 9:7

And of the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hasenuah,

1 Chronicles 9:7 (KJV)

The books of Chronicles record Israel’s history, with 1 Chronicles chapters 1-9 listing the genealogies of the twelve tribes. This verse names Benjaminite families who returned from the Babylonian exile and lived in Jerusalem. The parallel passage in Nehemiah 11:7 gives a longer line for Sallu, suggesting the Chronicler abbreviated the record. These genealogies helped the returned exiles confirm tribal identity and inheritance rights.

Sallu is identified as the son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hasenuah. These names preserve a specific family line within Benjamin, the tribe descended from Jacob’s youngest son and Rachel. Benjamin’s territory lay between Judah and Ephraim, and the tribe produced King Saul. The careful listing shows that God values each family and remembers their place among His people.

Genealogies in Scripture often confirm God’s faithfulness. Here the listing of returned exiles shows the restoration of Jerusalem and the reestablishment of worship after the exile. The Chronicler’s careful record also points to the preservation of the Messianic line that culminates in Jesus Christ. The return from Babylon was a sign of God’s mercy, as He kept His promise to bring a remnant back to the land.

This verse teaches that God values every person and family. The names may seem ordinary, but they represent real people whom God brought back to their land. Believers today can trust that God sees and remembers each life, even when human records overlook them. Just as the exiles needed to know their heritage, Christians can find security in their spiritual identity as children of God.

Although this passage gives no direct moral command, it affirms that God keeps His promises to preserve a remnant. The return from exile was a sign of His mercy. Readers can respond with gratitude, knowing that their own names are written in God’s book and that He remains faithful to restore and bless His people.
