1 Corinthians 1:30
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
1 Corinthians 1:30 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to the church in Corinth, where many took pride in human wisdom and status. In the surrounding passage, he contrasts the world’s wisdom with God’s wisdom, noting that God chose the foolish, weak, and despised to confound the wise and mighty, so that no one may boast before Him. Verse 30 is the climax of that argument: it grounds the believer’s entire position and blessings in God’s work in Christ, leaving no room for human boasting.
Meaning
“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus” declares that being in Christ is entirely God’s doing. It is by God’s grace and initiative, not human merit or effort, that believers are united with Christ and have a relationship with Him. This union is made possible through God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit. In Christ, believers find their identity and purpose.
“Who of God is made unto us wisdom” means that Christ is the embodiment of wisdom. Believers are not left to rely on their own limited understanding; they have access to the wisdom of God through Christ. This wisdom surpasses human knowledge and understanding, guiding believers in making godly decisions and living a life that honours Him. Christ reveals God’s plan of salvation, which the world considers foolishness but is actually God’s power.
“Righteousness” refers to being in a right standing with God. Through Jesus Christ, believers receive His righteousness, which is imputed to them by faith. They are justified before God and declared righteous because of Christ’s atoning work on the cross. This is not based on their own works or merit but solely on the grace of God.
“Sanctification” means being set apart or made holy. Through union with Christ, believers are sanctified. This involves the work of the Holy Spirit, who transforms them to become more like Christ in character and conduct. Sanctification is an ongoing process in the life of a believer, as they grow in conformity to the image of Christ.
“Redemption” refers to being delivered or set free. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, believers are redeemed from the bondage of sin and its consequences. They are set free from the power of sin, Satan, and eternal separation from God. This redemption is a precious gift received by faith in Jesus Christ.
Application
Because every spiritual blessing flows from God through Christ, believers have no reason to boast in themselves. Their identity, wisdom, righteousness, holiness, and freedom are all found in Him. This truth calls believers to glory in the Lord rather than in human wisdom or status, and to live with gratitude for the grace that placed them in Christ.
