1 Corinthians 10:27

“If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.”

Context:If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 1 Corinthians 10:27 (KJV)

In this verse, the apostle Paul is addressing the Corinthians’ questions about eating food that has been offered to idols. Throughout 1 Corinthians 8-10, Paul discusses the topic of food sacrificed to idols and its implications for believers.

In the context of the Corinthian culture, it was common for meat to be offered to idols in pagan temples. Some believers were unsure about whether they could eat this meat without participating in idol worship. Paul provides guidance on this matter.

In verse 27, Paul focuses on situations where an unbeliever invites a believer to a feast or meal where the food may have been offered to idols. He advises the believers that if they are inclined to attend, they are free to do so. The phrase “bid you to a feast” refers to being invited to a gathering or meal hosted by a non-believer.

Paul’s primary instruction is for the believers to eat whatever food is set before them without questioning its source or whether it was offered to idols. However, this is not to be done out of a disregard for conscience or a complete disregard for spiritual matters.

The phrase “asking no question for conscience sake” means that the believers should not inquire about the origin of the food or whether it has been offered to idols. By doing so, they avoid causing unnecessary offence or creating stumbling blocks for others. This principle is based on the understanding that idols are nothing in themselves (1 Corinthians 8:4) and that eating such food does not affect one’s relationship with God.

However, it’s important to note that this instruction does not apply to situations where the believer is aware that the food has been specifically offered to idols, or when their own conscience convicts them against eating it. In such cases, the believers should abstain from eating for the sake of their own conscience and to avoid giving the impression of endorsing idol worship.

Overall, Paul’s message in this verse emphasizes the freedom that believers have in Christ. While they are not to participate in idol worship, they can partake in meals with non-believers without questioning the food’s origin or causing unnecessary offence. The key principle is to act in love and consideration for others, always seeking to maintain a good witness for Christ.
