1 Corinthians 10:28
“But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof:”
Context:In the previous verses (1 Corinthians 10:25-27), Paul addresses the issue of eating meat sold in the marketplace, which may have been previously offered to idols. He advises believers that they can eat such meat without questioning its origin, as “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (1 Corinthians 10:26, NIV). However, if someone specifically points out that the food was offered to idols, then Paul advises against eating it.
The verse emphasizes the importance of conscience and consideration for others. Paul instructs believers that if someone informs them that the food has been offered to idols, they should refrain from eating it. This instruction is not based on the inherent spiritual significance of the food but rather on the concern for the conscience of the person who shared this information.
By abstaining from eating the food offered to idols, believers demonstrate respect and sensitivity towards those who might be weaker in their faith. Eating such food in the presence of a weaker believer could potentially lead them to stumble in their own faith or violate their conscience.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that even though some food may have been offered to idols, believers should remember that the earth and everything in it ultimately belongs to the Lord. This declaration reinforces the idea that idols have no true power or authority since everything ultimately belongs to God alone.
