1 Corinthians 11:33

Listen to this article

“Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the First Epistle to the Corinthians to address various issues and conflicts within the church in Corinth. In Chapter 11, Paul discusses proper conduct during the Lord’s Supper or the communion meal.

Fellowship and Unity:The verse begins with the phrase “Wherefore, my brethren.” This emphasizes the sense of brotherhood and community among believers. Paul emphasizes that they should come together for fellowship, symbolized by the shared meal.

Waiting for One Another:The phrase “tarry one for another” signifies the importance of waiting for each other before beginning the meal. This instruction teaches believers to be considerate of others and avoid selfishness or haste. It encourages an attitude of unity, equality, and mutual care within the church community.

Practical Application:This verse highlights the importance of gathering together as believers and treating one another with respect and love. It reminds us not to prioritise personal needs or desires over the well-being of others. Instead, we should exercise patience and consideration, waiting for everyone to be present before starting communal activities.

  • Symbolism:The shared meal mentioned in this verse refers to the Lord’s Supper or communion. By applying the principle of waiting for one another, Paul highlights the significance of this sacred observance. Just as the believers are to wait for one another before partaking of the meal, they are to recognise the spiritual unity and equality they have in Christ.
  • Spiritual Application:Beyond the literal act of waiting for one another, this verse also encourages us to have a broader perspective on unity and fellowship within the body of Christ. It teaches us to be sensitive to the needs and circumstances of others, demonstrating love and selflessness in our interactions.
