1 Corinthians 11:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

Neither was the man created for the woman: but the woman for the man. 1 Corinthians 11:9 (KJV)

Context: The verse is part of a larger passage in which the apostle Paul addresses the issue of proper conduct during worship gatherings in the Corinthian church. He discusses matters of head coverings and the distinction between men and women in their roles and appearances.

Creation Order: This verse highlights the order of creation. Paul states that the woman was created for the man. This does not imply superiority or inferiority but emphasizes the different roles and purposes assigned to men and women by God.

Complementarity: The verse suggests that men and women are complementary to one another. In the created order, God designed men and women to have distinct roles and functions. This complementarity is an essential aspect of God’s plan for harmonious relationships.

Mutual Dependence: While the verse emphasizes the woman’s creation for the man, it does not imply that men are independent of women. In fact, later in the same passage, Paul states that “neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 11:11). This emphasizes the mutual dependence and interconnectedness between men and women.

Order in Worship: Paul’s overall intention in this passage is to establish a sense of order and propriety in the Corinthian church’s worship gatherings. The discussion on head coverings and gender distinctions reflects cultural norms of the time. Paul seeks to maintain decorum and honour within the worship context while acknowledging the essential roles of both men and women.

Application Today: While the cultural practices mentioned in this passage may not be applicable today, the underlying principles remain relevant. The passage encourages believers to embrace their God‑given roles and functions, recognising the mutual dependence and complementarity of men and women in the context of the church and society.

Mutual Respect: This passage should not be used to promote inequality, discrimination, or the mistreatment of women. Rather, it highlights the complementary roles and purposes assigned to men and women by God. Both men and women should respect and value one another as equal image‑bearers of God, honouring the roles and responsibilities given to each gender.

Interpretation: The interpretation of any Bible passage should be done in light of the entire biblical context and with a heart seeking God’s truth and wisdom.
