1 Corinthians 12:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

“Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”

Context:First Corinthians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular section, Paul addresses the spiritual gifts and the importance of unity within the body of Christ.

The Holy Spirit and Confession of Jesus as Lord:In this verse, Paul emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in confessing Jesus as Lord. The phrase “no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost” highlights the vital work of the Holy Spirit in our relationship with Christ. The Holy Spirit enables believers to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and recognize His divine authority.

The Influence of the Holy Spirit:Paul clarifies that anyone who speaks by the Spirit of God would never utter words that oppose or curse Jesus. The Holy Spirit works in believers’ lives to bring them into alignment with the truth of Christ. This verse reminds us that the Holy Spirit guides our words and attitudes, ensuring that we honor and exalt Jesus.

The Importance of Spiritual Discernment:By emphasizing that no one can genuinely confess Jesus as Lord without the Holy Spirit’s guidance, Paul highlights the necessity of spiritual discernment. It’s not merely an intellectual acknowledgment of Jesus’ lordship but a spiritual revelation enabled by the Holy Spirit. This discernment helps believers differentiate between the true work of the Spirit and false teachings or spirits.

Unity in the Body of Christ:Paul’s intention in discussing spiritual gifts and the work of the Holy Spirit is to emphasize the importance of unity within the church. By recognizing the Holy Spirit’s role in confessing Jesus as Lord, believers are encouraged to come together in love and cooperation. The diverse spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit are meant to be used for the edification of the body of Christ, not for personal superiority or division.

Application:As believers, this verse reminds us to depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance and revelation. We should be cautious of any teaching or attitude that goes against the acknowledgment of Jesus as Lord. Additionally, we should seek unity within the body of Christ, valuing the unique spiritual gifts each believer possesses while pursuing love and cooperation.

  • In conclusion:1 Corinthians 12:3 emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in confessing Jesus as Lord and encourages believers to walk in unity, guided by the Spirit, and using their spiritual gifts for the edification of the church.
