But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Context
The apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address divisions and disorders in the Corinthian church. In chapter 12, he teaches about spiritual gifts and the unity of the body of Christ. Verse 7 stands as a foundational statement: every believer receives a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Manifestation of the Spirit: The Greek word translated “manifestation” (phanerosis) means an outward showing or revelation. It refers to the visible expression of the Holy Spirit’s work through a believer, not merely an inward experience. This includes the spiritual gifts listed later in the chapter, such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, and prophecy.
Given to Every Man: The phrase “to every man” (hekastō) indicates that this gift is given to each individual believer, regardless of position, status, or spiritual maturity. Every member of the body of Christ has a role and is equipped by the Spirit.
To Profit Withal: The purpose is “to profit withal” (pros to sympheron), meaning for the advantage or benefit of all. These gifts are not for personal glory but for building up the church and advancing God’s kingdom.
Meaning
The manifestation of the Spirit is not the Spirit’s own essence, but the gifts and graces that demonstrate His presence and work. Even the least measure, such as being able to say “Jesus is Lord,” shows the Spirit’s work. Therefore, every believer has a gift to contribute to the body of Christ.
Application
As believers, we should recognize and understand the spiritual gifts we have been given. These gifts are meant to be used selflessly for the common good. We are called to discern, develop, and deploy our gifts in service to others, glorifying God and contributing to the flourishing of the church.
Unity in Diversity: Paul stresses the importance of unity amidst the diversity of gifts. In the following verses, he compares the church to a human body, showing that each part is essential and dependent on the others. The church needs the diverse gifts of its members to operate effectively.
The Holy Spirit’s Role: The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts according to His sovereign will. We should seek the Spirit’s guidance and submit to His leading, allowing Him to work through us for the greater benefit of the body of Christ.
