1 Corinthians 12:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”

1. Context: The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to address various issues in the Corinthian church. In this particular chapter, Paul is discussing spiritual gifts and the importance of unity within the body of Christ.

2. Manifestation of the Spirit: The “manifestation of the Spirit” refers to the outward expression or demonstration of the Holy Spirit’s work in the lives of believers. The Holy Spirit empowers and equips believers with spiritual gifts for the edification of the church and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

3. Given to Every Man: The verse emphasizes that the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every believer, regardless of their position, status, or spiritual maturity. Every member of the body of Christ has a role to play and is bestowed with spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit.

4. To Profit Withal: The purpose of these spiritual gifts is to benefit and build up the church as a whole. Each gift serves a specific function within the body, and when exercised in love and unity, they contribute to the overall growth and well-being of the church.

5. Application: As believers, it is important to recognize and understand the spiritual gifts we have been given. These gifts are not for personal glory or pride but are meant to be used selflessly for the common good. We are called to discern, develop, and deploy our gifts in service to others, utilizing them to glorify God and contribute to the flourishing of the church.

6. Unity in Diversity: Following the context of this chapter, it is evident that Paul stresses the importance of unity amidst the diversity of spiritual gifts. In the subsequent verses, he compares the body of Christ to a human body, highlighting that each part is essential and dependent on the others. Just as a body cannot function properly if one part is missing or dysfunctional, the church needs the diverse gifts of its members to operate effectively.

7. The Holy Spirit’s Role: It is crucial to recognize that the Holy Spirit is the one who distributes spiritual gifts according to His sovereign will (1 Corinthians 12:11). We should seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and submit ourselves to His leading, allowing Him to work through us for the greater benefit of the body of Christ.
