To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

Context

This verse belongs to Paul’s extended teaching on spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12. The Corinthians were divided over which gifts seemed more impressive, so Paul stresses that every gift comes from the same Holy Spirit and exists for the edification and unity of the Church. The immediate context in 1 Corinthians 12:11 makes this clear: one and the same Spirit distributes all these gifts to each believer as He wills.

Meaning

The working of miracles is the supernatural ability, given by the Holy Spirit, to perform extraordinary acts beyond natural human capability. It involves the intervention of God’s power to bring about miraculous signs and wonders for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom.

Prophecy is the ability to receive and communicate messages from God. Those who possess this gift are empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak forth God’s word, bringing encouragement, exhortation, correction, and direction to individuals or the entire church. Prophecy can include predicting future events, but its primary purpose is to strengthen, comfort, and edify the body of Christ.

Discerning of spirits enables believers to distinguish between different spirits, whether they are from God, human, or demonic in nature. It involves perceiving the spiritual realm, understanding the motives and intentions behind actions, and recognizing the presence of spiritual influences. This gift is crucial for testing spiritual claims and maintaining spiritual purity, guarding against deception within the Church.

Divers kinds of tongues refers to the spiritual gift of speaking in languages unknown to the speaker. This can be a form of personal prayer and worship, as well as a means of edification when interpreted for the benefit of the entire congregation.

The interpretation of tongues complements the gift of speaking in tongues. It involves the ability to interpret and make known the meaning of a message spoken in tongues to the congregation. The interpretation is not a translation of the language but rather an understanding of the message conveyed by the Holy Spirit through the speaker.

Application

Every believer is uniquely gifted, and the purpose of these gifts is to build up the Church, promote unity, and bring glory to God. Each gift is valuable and essential, and they should be exercised in love and for the benefit of others. As believers, we should seek to discover and develop the gifts God has given us, using them faithfully and responsibly in service to Him and others. It is also important to cultivate a spirit of unity and mutual respect within the body of Christ, recognizing and appreciating the diverse gifts that God has bestowed upon His people.

Reflection

Because the same Spirit distributes all these gifts according to His sovereign will, no believer has grounds for pride and no gift can be dismissed as unimportant. The diversity of gifts reflects the richness of God’s wisdom, and each one finds its proper purpose only when it serves the whole body in love.
