1 Corinthians 12:10

“To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.”

1 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV) says: To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues.

This verse is part of a larger passage in 1 Corinthians 12 where the apostle Paul discusses spiritual gifts and their importance within the body of Christ. In this particular verse, Paul lists several spiritual gifts that are given to believers by the Holy Spirit for the edification and unity of the Church.

Working of Miracles:This refers to the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to perform extraordinary acts that go beyond natural human capabilities. It involves the intervention of God’s power to bring about miraculous signs and wonders for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom.

Prophecy:Prophecy is the ability to receive and communicate messages from God. Those who possess this gift are empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak forth God’s word, bringing encouragement, exhortation, correction, and direction to individuals or the entire church. Prophecy can include predicting future events, but its primary purpose is to strengthen, comfort, and edify the body of Christ.

Discerning of Spirits:This gift enables believers to discern or distinguish between different spirits, whether they are from God, human, or demonic in nature. It involves perceiving the spiritual realm, understanding the motives and intentions behind actions, and recognizing the presence of spiritual influences. The gift of discernment is crucial for maintaining spiritual purity and guarding against deception within the Church.

Divers Kinds of Tongues:This refers to the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues, also known as glossolalia. It involves speaking in a language unknown to the speaker but can be understood by someone with the gift of interpretation. Speaking in tongues can be a form of personal prayer and worship, as well as a means of edification when interpreted for the benefit of the entire congregation.

Interpretation of Tongues:This gift complements the gift of speaking in tongues. It involves the ability to interpret and make known the meaning of a message spoken in tongues to the congregation. The interpretation is not a translation of the language but rather an understanding of the message conveyed by the Holy Spirit through the speaker.

It’s important to note that these spiritual gifts are distributed by the Holy Spirit according to His sovereign will. Every believer is uniquely gifted, and the purpose of these gifts is to build up the Church, promote unity, and bring glory to God. Each gift is valuable and essential, and they should be exercised in love and for the benefit of others.

As believers, we should seek to discover and develop the gifts God has given us, using them faithfully and responsibly in service to Him and others. It is also important to cultivate a spirit of unity and mutual respect within the body of Christ, recognizing and appreciating the diverse gifts that God has bestowed upon His people.

I hope this Bible study on 1 Corinthians 12:10 has been helpful in understanding the spiritual gifts mentioned in this verse and their significance in the life of the Church.
