1 Corinthians 12:11

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1 Corinthians 12:11 (KJV)

This verse concludes a passage in which the apostle Paul addresses spiritual gifts and their purpose within the body of Christ. In the preceding verses, Paul lists various gifts, ministries, and effects, and here he emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s role in distributing them among believers.

Paul begins by stating, “But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit.” The Holy Spirit is the source and originator of every spiritual gift. While believers possess diverse gifts, they all come from the same Spirit, highlighting the unity and harmonious functioning of the Spirit within the body of Christ.

The verse continues, “dividing to every man severally as he will.” The Spirit distributes gifts to individual believers according to His own discretion and purpose. The phrase “severally as he will” indicates that the Spirit apportions to each one individually just as He wills, determining the specific gift for each person. This implies that no one should boast about their gifts or feel superior to others, since the allocation is entirely at the Spirit’s discretion.

This verse reminds believers that spiritual gifts are not earned or achieved by personal merit but are given by the Holy Spirit as He determines. It emphasizes the sovereignty of the Spirit in the distribution of gifts and promotes humility, unity, and cooperation among believers. The Spirit’s sovereign distribution is for the common good and profit of the whole church, not for private advantage.

Believers are to be content with the gifts they have received, not despise others who have greater gifts, and not covet the highest stations. The focus is on faithfulness and diligence in the Master’s work with the gifts entrusted to each person. This verse encourages believers to appreciate the diversity of spiritual gifts within the body of Christ and to honor the Holy Spirit as the one who empowers and equips each member for their unique role in the church. It calls for a cooperative and unified approach to serving God and fulfilling His purposes.

The verse affirms the deity of the Holy Spirit, as His works declare Him to be truly God. Recognizing the Spirit’s sovereign role in distributing gifts leads believers to gratitude, humility, and a deeper reliance on Him for service in the church.
