1 Corinthians 15:34
“Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.”
Context:The apostle Paul wrote the book of 1 Corinthians to address various issues and challenges faced by the church in Corinth. In chapter 15, Paul focuses on the resurrection of Christ and the hope of the resurrection for believers.
Awakening to Righteousness:The verse begins with the exhortation to “awake to righteousness.” This call to wakefulness implies that there is a need for spiritual alertness and a conscious effort to live according to God’s righteousness. As believers, we are called to be vigilant and intentional in our pursuit of righteousness, always aware of the spiritual battles we face.
Sin Not:The verse continues with the command to “sin not.” This instruction reinforces the call to live righteously. As followers of Christ, we are called to turn away from sin and pursue a holy and blameless life. The grace of God empowers us to resist sin and walk in obedience to His commands.
Lack of Knowledge of God:Paul mentions that “some have not the knowledge of God.” This implies that there were individuals within the Corinthian church who lacked a deep understanding of God’s character, His ways, and His truth. It highlights the importance of knowing God intimately and having a solid foundation in His Word. Ignorance of God can lead to spiritual complacency, compromising our walk of faith.
Shameful Ignorance:Paul’s statement “I speak this to your shame” reveals his disappointment with the Corinthians. He expected them to have a deeper knowledge and understanding of God, which would lead to righteous living. Their lack of knowledge and resulting sinful behavior brought shame upon themselves and the church.
- Awake to Righteousness:We are called to be alert and intentional in pursuing a righteous life. We must be aware of the spiritual battles around us and strive to live in obedience to God’s commands.
- Resist Sin:As believers, we have the power through Christ to resist sin. We should actively choose righteousness and avoid sinful behaviors. God’s grace equips us to overcome temptation and live holy lives.
- Pursue Knowledge of God:Knowing God deeply and intimately is crucial for our spiritual growth. We should invest time in studying His Word, seeking His presence through prayer, and pursuing a personal relationship with Him. This knowledge will equip us to live in a manner that glorifies Him.
- Overcoming Shameful Ignorance:We should strive to deepen our understanding of God and His ways. Ignorance of His truth can lead to sinful behavior and bring shame upon ourselves and the Church. We must continually seek to grow in knowledge and wisdom, being transformed by the truth of God’s Word.
